About Us
The use of infill and higher density housing has reduced the opportunities for people to have meaningful backyard food gardens.  Many people have turned to community gardens to fulfill their desire to grow some of there own food.  But people find that community garden space is limited and many gardens have long waiting lists.  CGC was established in 2009 as a 501(c)(3) Domestic Nonprofit Corporation to expand the community gardening opportunities in the Portland Metro area in response to this growing need.  Land owners provide a suitable site, access to water, and long-term management for the garden.  CGC develops the site into a community garden free of charge to the land owner.  We never saw a weedy patch of ground that didn't look like a good site for a community garden.

The corporation directors and board are all volunteers.  There are no paid staff members.  The projects are constructed by volunteers and paid contractors.  We make every effort to have the maximum number of dollars go “into the dirt.”
